Sensory Play for Toddlers and Preschoolers!

Sensory Play for Toddlers and Preschoolers!

Sensory play is an important part of early childhood development, that provides opportunities for children to actively use their senses as they explore their world, as ‘sensory play’ is crucial to brain development.

Learning through sensory exploration comes naturally to the young children, which  stimulates all the five senses in them – touch, taste, sight, smell & hearing. This has tremendous value with endless creative learning opportunities for children to build an understanding of objects, spaces, people and interactions, that are yet to be fully developed (in them).

Presenting children with inviting materials and experiences, would spark curiosity, imagination & exploration that can be fun and interesting for young children, as well as encouragement for them to explore and investigate. Moreover, these sensory play activities support children to use the ‘scientific method’ of observing, forming a hypothesis, experimenting and making conclusions.

When the toddlers are playing with a sensory activity, they are:

  • Working on their independent play skills
  • Math skills (capacity)
  • Imaginary play / dramatic play
  • Life skills (pouring, scooping, transferring)
  • Fine motor skills
  • Tactile learning
  • Developing self-control

It’s time to start your sensory bin journey!

Remember: Sensory play doesn’t have to be messy.

They don’t have to cost an arm and a leg to set up.

They don’t need to be anything fancy.

It’s all about providing children with a bin that sparks their imagination and captures their attention. Have fun with these sensory plays!

  • Play with food

This might get a little messy, but allowing your little one to play with food — squishing, smearing, and tasting as they go — gives them a sensory experience that helps them learn. Food play can always work to distinguish playtime and mealtime as different times. And as they get older, you can talk about table manners with them. But when they’re young, this can be a great, safe way to explore texture, taste, and smell through experimentation and play.

  • Sound tubes

A sound tube helps children connect with the auditory world around them. To create a sound tube for your little one, you’ll only need a few simple supplies. First, save a few empty paper towel rolls, then collect a variety of different materials to go inside each tube like uncooked rice, dried beans, or beads. Fill each tube with a different material and secure the ends of the tubes safely (duct tape can work for this).

Your little one will be delight in hearing the different noises with these sound tubes!

  • Sandbox

If you’re curious to get outside or want your little one to feel the sun on their face as they play, consider investing in a sandbox and a few good sand toys to help your toddler get a feel for the world.

You don’t need anything special to make a sandbox or sand table especially fun for the children.

Sensory play is the type of play activities that stimulate children’s senses and provide sensory experiences to stimulate their other senses. These activities are important for brain development and can strengthen sensory related synapses and functions. While it can get a little messy from time to time, but this will definitely help your child engage with their senses and will give them the chance to learn and grow as they interact with the world around them!
